Always thought that Team of Rivals thing was too good to be true, going, as it does, against all personal experience with people and rivals and whatnot. I was willing to give it the benefit of the doubt, since I haven't delved that deep into the history, and, in superficial retrospect at least, Lincoln was so much wiser than whatever passes for a statesman today.
But. The LA Times does a more thorough job than I ever could (go go mainstream media!) and it turns out that frenemies in Lincoln's day were just as selfish, small and petty as they are now. Just as requiring Paris, Nicole and Lauren Conrad to agree on one baby shower gift would be a disaster, so adding Clinton, McCain or any other erstwhile rival to the Cabinet would cause more harm than good. Human nature. Go figure.
